As seen from the previous slides, Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. underwent a slump from 2001 to 2002, a period we termed “Negative Growth”. During this time, Uniqlo faced a 46% loss in profit. Despite opening its UK store on September 21, 2001, the company faced 12 consecutive months of loss. Although the firm recorded a sales of GBP 14 million, it also recorded an operating loss of GBP 20 million. In the end, the company’s founder and president Tadashi Yanai stepped down from mangement and Genichi Tamatsuka replaced him.

The next period is the “Counter-Reaction Strategy” period, during which Uniqlo’s operations took a positive turn. During the time Tamatsuka was president, the company turned around and its profits steadily increased over the years. However, on September of 2005, Yanai returned to his previous position as the president of Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., and opened up a new period we term the “Counter-Reaction Offense”.
