A derivative is a financial instrument whose value depends on other, more basic, underlying variables.

Contracts to buy or sell an asset on or before a future date at a price specified today.


Contracts that give the owner the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an asset.


Contracts to exchange cash on or before a specified future date based on the underlying value of currencies, interest rates, and so on.

complex and unusual derivative contracts that depend on the value of some specific underlying.

This term contrasts with the use of Vanilla
Derivatives to denote more standard derivative
contracts (more highly liquid , standardized)
